ELIPSOIDAL REFLECTOR SPOTLIGHT (ESR)
The Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlight (ERS) category of stage lights is meant for highlighting individual subjects or stage pieces with a relatively narrow beam angle. This is best suited for drawing attention to a person or an object. ERS lights always have adjustable focus and can have gobos placed in them to project patterns or logos as well.
PARABOLIC REFLECTORS (PAR)
This category is suited for use as wash fixtures. They are capable of lighting large portions of the stage, thereby filling up gaps uncovered by the spotlights, or washing the entire stage. They usually are without zoom or focus options, but come in a variety of lens types to get different beam angles. This category is the most commonly used type of fixtures due to their relatively low cost and wide coverage.
Fresnel lighting fixtures are a hybrid between the PAR and ERS categories. They have a zoom function but lack focusing abilities. They do cast a much “softer” light than ERS fixtures. They come in handy when you cannot hang a fixture in an optimum location and need adjustable optics to help achieve the look you want.
Moving head lighting fixtures consist of varieties such as spotlights, washes, beams, and hybrids. Each of these varieties refers to the beam angle range of the fixture. Beams are the narrowest, with spotlights in the midway and, washes being the widest. Hybrids could be any combination of those three. These units also have colour capability, movement, gobo patterns, and a long list of other functions. Moving heads are the most versatile option, and allow you to really take a show to a whole new level.
